The mother after revelations about group housing in Nyköping: “I have cried and been angry”

The bad conditions at the group accommodation in Nyköping municipality were discovered in August. The discovery led to reports to the Inspectorate for Care and Care, the suspension of staff and the municipality setting up its own investigation.

Locked users

As SVT Sörmland has previously reported, the municipality’s investigation shows that staff must have handled the residents’ payment cards in a way that is contrary to current regulations, that photos of the residents may have been spread further and that users were kept locked up for periods.

There is also information that there must have been an electric fence in place, but SVT has not been able to confirm this.

– You were shocked, says a woman whose adult son has intellectual disabilities and lives in the group home.

Great concern about the situation

The mother, who wishes to remain anonymous, says that for several years she has felt a concern about her son’s situation and that she feels that the staff had great difficulty in meeting her son’s care needs.

SVT has also spoken to a father whose son lives at the residence. He is critical of the fact that he has not received any information about how the abuse has affected his son.

The lid on from the municipality

– I know nothing. It has been the lid on from the municipality’s side, he says.

Carina Wallin (S) is chairman of the care and care committee in Nyköping and politically responsible for the activities at the group home. She says that the municipality must review the information to the relatives, and regrets what has been discovered at the residence:

– It is simply a lack of leadership. Our employees have also not had all the knowledge you need about these users and their needs.

Was it right to suspend the staff?

– Yes, it was in this situation. We cannot in good conscience sit at home over a weekend and know that our residents still have staff who have not done what they are supposed to do.

The municipality of Nyköping starts an external investigation

According to Wallin, the municipality will in the near future start an external investigation that will look over the entire function support care. This is to reduce the risk of something similar happening again.

Are you worried that something similar will be discovered elsewhere?

– No, I can’t be. We must have mutual trust in each other. We have employees who ensure quality and do a great job out in our operations every day.

What do you have to say to the residents and their relatives?

– I want them to feel safe from now on.
