The most watched film on Netflix in 2024 features swords, dragons and evil nobles

Great new films come out every year, but there is little public data when it comes to what is being watched the most on streaming providers. However, Netflix has now published which film will be watched the most on their platform worldwide in 2024.

Where does the data come from? While it is always very transparent in the cinema which films are currently doing well, this is not always so clear with streaming providers such as Netflix and Co. However, Netflix has now published a large amount of data.

It also includes which film was watched the most on the platform from January to June 2024. A medieval fantasy film is in the lead by a good margin.

Damsel throws you into the Middle Ages

What is the film about? The film “Damsel” is by far the number one movie on Netflix. With over 143 million views worldwide, it is ahead of the film “Lift” with Kevin Hart.

In Damsel we accompany Elodie, daughter of Lord Bayford. The impoverished country nobleman is facing ruin because the land no longer produces any crops and he and his subordinates are running out of firewood.

Out of necessity, they decide to marry their daughter Elodie off to a distant country. Even though Elodie would have preferred to choose her partner herself, she faces her fate and travels to the distant country.

The rulers there have great wealth, which overwhelms the young noblewoman. However, she has no idea that it is all just a trap, because shortly after her wedding she is thrown into the dragon’s cave as a sacrifice.

There she meets a fire-breathing dragon and realizes that she is not the first to suffer this fate.

How is the film received? The film has surprisingly mixed reviews on IMDb.com, where it only has a rating of 6.1 out of 10 stars. In their reviews, users say that the film is quite nice, enough for a movie night, but not extremely well thought out or exciting.

On Reddit, users are also reacting to the Netflix number one. They can hardly explain why exactly this film is at number 1. The most popular theory is about an often forgotten target group: children.

In the comments on Reddit, users like DukeofVermont say, “And you don’t need that many kids, because they watch a little more than 25 times. Disney’s numbers are all movies that kids watch over and over and over again.”

Whether children are really the reason Damsel is in first place or whether it is due to the well-made dragon cannot be definitively determined. But it is interesting that a rather mediocre film is in first place. Something like that would be less conceivable in video games, especially if you look at the developers of the legendary Skyrim: Skyrim developer talks about the pressure of Elder Scrolls 6 – employees “put their heads in their hands and cry”
