Quentin Tarantino is an avowed Western fan. So it was only a matter of time before he made his own. It would then be his seventh film: Django Unchained is not only one of Tarantino’s best films, but also the most successful Western of all time. The 165-minute epic is streaming on Netflix.
Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained on Netflix: Bloody Western doesn’t bore you for a second
In the bloody western Django Unchained, the German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) takes the slave Django (Jamie Foxx) under his wing. The duo are on their way to the diabolical plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), who is holding Django’s wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) prisoner. The two of them want to free her with a risky plan, but difficulties arise.
As in Inglourious Basterds, Christoph Waltz captivates the audience with his captivating charm. Neither Jamie Foxx nor Waltz plays the archetype of a western hero à la John Wayne, which the Austrians don’t respond well to. This time the role of the villain goes to DiCaprio, whose friendly smile makes your blood run cold.
The many great characters offer one verbal exchange of blows after another, just as we know and love from Tarantino. It’s no wonder that fans stormed the cinema in 2012 and made Django Unchained the most successful western of all time.
Django Unchained is the most successful western of all time
Django Unchained Dances With Wolves took over with box office grosses of $449 million the list of the most financially successful Westerns since 1990 (via The Numbers). However, the income was not adjusted for inflation, otherwise Kevin Costner and his wolf would still be in first place.
Django Unchained is the undisputed leader in Tarantino’s own career. The earnings are still well ahead of his last work, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, which is at number 2 with 377 million (via Collider).
