The most successful German film of all time was seen

I’m just dissatisfied with the overall situation!” In the summer of 2001, you could hardly walk past people in Germany without picking up a quote from The Shoe of Manitu. The western comedy from LOL boss Michael Herbig left an immense cultural footprint and has been the most successful German film of all time for 22 years. Today it’s on TV.

On TV: The Shoe of Manitu was never continued despite its mega success

The Shoe of Manitu is a parody of the German Karl May films of the 1960s. In the western comedy, Abahachi (Herbig) and his white blood brother Ranger (Christian Tramitz) go in search of a legendary treasure. They also have to escape the unscrupulous Santa Maria (Sky du Mont), who framed them for a dastardly murder.

11.7 million Germans saw Manitu’s Shoe on the screen, as Inside Kino shows. No film from the last two decades has been anywhere near as successful: second place goes to Das Wirtshaus im Spessart from 1958.

However, a sequel to the comedy sensation was never released. Herbig and his Bullyparade crew around Tramitz and Rick Kavanian preferred to turn to other material from their comedy series and brought Traumschiff Surprise – Period 1 to the cinema. Apparently there has been a draft for a sequel for years, as reported on day 24. In the end, the audience wants “usually exactly the same thing again, but different“, says Herbig. If there is a sequel, it will probably be a long time coming.

When is Manitu’s Shoe on TV?

Manitu’s shoe runs this Sunday, December 31, 2023, at 8:35 p.m. on ProSieben. If you don’t have time, you can catch up on Michael Herbig’s western comedy on January 1st at 6:45 a.m.
