That’s the (spoiler-free) plot of No Way Home
Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) life is thrown into disarray as his reputation as a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is in tatters. Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal’s villain from Far From Home) blamed Spider-Man for a drone attack in London. As if that wasn’t enough, Peter’s true identity also becomes public knowledge. The two parts of his life – Student and superhero – can no longer be separated from each other.

In desperation, Peter turns to fellow Avengers Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and asks for help. A magic spell will make the world forget that Peter Parker is actually Spider-Man. But this intervention in reality has catastrophic consequences for the multiverse.
Warning, there are spoilers for the cameos in No Way Home from here on out.Why some actors had to come to set covered up
Most other films would probably be happy with a cast including Tom Holland, Zendaya and Benedict Cumberbatch, but the No Way Home team had bigger ambitions. The script uses the chaos in the multiverse to… bringing back several stars from previous Spider-Man filmswhich were not part of the so-called Marvel Cinematic Universe.
These include the two Spider-Man actors Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire as well as the villains Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus), Willem Dafoe (Green Goblin) and Jamie Foxx (Electro). To ensure that these appearances did not become known through set pictures, the stars had to be smuggled in front of the camera using various tricks. Willem Dafoe reported on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon:
When I went to set, They put a black cape on me and always made me sit in a car with tinted windows. They didn’t want me to be anywhere because they didn’t want anyone to know I was in town making a movie.
Colleague Alfred Molina nevertheless revealed his appearance several months before the film’s release because he considered everything else to be a farce because of the churning rumor mill (via Variety).
Spider-Man: No Way Home is the third highest-grossing superhero film
