Kayseri City Hospital Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Assoc. Dr. Esma Eryılmaz Eren; He made statements on the occasion of December 27, International Epidemic Preparedness Day, declared by the United Nations following the coronavirus pandemic.
‘THE EFFECTS OF THE PANDEMIC CONTINUE’
Eren; “We have recently experienced a major pandemic and its effects are still continuing. Approximately 7 million people in the world have died due to this pandemic. We were caught unprepared for this epidemic, and the United Nations has determined a day for everyone to be ready against possible epidemics from now on, and December 27 is International Epidemic Preparedness Day. “An epidemic is defined as the occurrence of a disease more than normal in a certain region within a certain period of time. If the epidemic occurs in a region, it is defined as an epidemic, and if it affects the whole world, it is defined as a pandemic.”
“THE MOST IMPORTANT PREVENTIVE SYSTEM IS HAND WASHING”
Eren warned the citizens; “Health managers are obliged to prepare for these epidemics, but citizens must also be prepared. The most important epidemic prevention system is hand washing. We must embed this in our lives. Because we go out, we come into contact with each other and in common areas. We touch the same places. Everyone who comes home from outside must wash their hands.” This is our most important epidemic prevention measure.
‘INFLUENZA AND PNEUMONIA ARE INCREASING’
We are in winter and we are seeing an increase in viral infections. It is important to remember to wear a mask in public areas. As every winter, influenza and some pneumonias increase. These are the measures we must take every year. “Completing the vaccinations recommended for the risk group and completing childhood vaccinations will be protective in the coming period,” he said.
