To get a powerful spell, you have to be really evil

What kind of magic is this? Word of Power: Death (English: Power Word Kill) is one of the most iconic spells from the Dungeons and Dragons universe. This special level 9 spell forces any creature with 100 hit points or less to die instantly. The special feature, or rather the catch, is that you can only use the spell once per campaign. The spell in Baldur’s Gate 3 would probably be too strong if you could use it per long or short rest.

You can even use this spell on the final boss once he drops to 100 hit points or less.

This is how you get the spell: The path to this extraordinary spell begins when you discover that you are a Bhaalspawn with the Dark Urge. To do this you have to kill Orin and switch to the evil side. After you defeat Orin in Act 3 in the Temple of Bhaal, a dark scene awaits you.

In this scene you will be given the choice:

  • Will you change your path or devote yourself entirely to the service of Bhaal?
  • If you choose to serve Bhaal, your Dark Urge will be rewarded with the powerful spell Word of Power: Death. The outcome of your decision not only ensures that you receive the spell, but also affects your story.

What makes the magic so special? In Baldur’s Gate 3 you can reach a maximum of level 12. Dungeons and Dragons and Pathfinder games offer 20 levels or more. The limit at level 12 is probably just right, as even level 7 spells can be very powerful.

What makes it even cooler is that you can get a level 9 spell that would normally only be available at level 17. Even if it can only be used once and only if the opponent has 100 or fewer hit points.

The fact that this powerful spell can only be used once per campaign emphasizes its exclusivity and requires wise consideration as to when to use it most effectively.

Maybe you have a particular grudge against an NPC – this is where the spell could prove to be the perfect answer.
