Too much sex and violence: Spartacus was only allowed to be edited on TV
The original Spartacus series revolved around the historical figure of the same name (Andy Whitfield and later Liam McIntyre) who has to fight for his life as a gladiator in the arena. She decides to throw off her shackles and organize an uprising.
The what-if sequel House of Ashur explores an alternative course of history, in which Ashur (Nick E. Tarabay), the gladiator boss Batiatus (John Hannah) served as a ruthless right-hand man, doesn’t lose his head and is able to thwart Spartacus’ rebellion. In return for his help in suppressing the slave rebellion, he takes over the gladiator school in the spin-off and begins a new era of tyranny.
To date, the Spartacus franchise has consisted of three seasons and the prequel series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. The last episodes of the main series aired in 2013. The series is still notorious among fans due to its level of violence and explicit sex scenes. Some consequences were only allowed to be shown in shortened form on German TV, According to editing reports, the prequel Gods of the Arena was even indexed.
When is Spartacus: House of Ashur coming?
Spartacus: House of Ashur still has no official start date. According to the Hollywood Reporter, it will be released in the US in fall 2025. It is produced by the American broadcaster Starz, which, among other things, has a channel on Amazon Prime and AppleTV+. Steven S. DeKnight returns as showrunner. It is not yet known whether ProSieben will secure the rights to the free TV broadcast again.
