California is the third state in the United States that has now declared a state of emergency to slow the spread of monkeypox. The United States is currently the epicenter of the spread of the virus with 5,800 reported cases in 47 states.
While the WHO has declared monkeypox an international health emergency, the Biden administration remains hopeful that the outbreak can be contained.
But critical months lie ahead – the number of cases in the US is doubling every week but no new vaccine doses can be delivered until October at the earliest, according to the Washington Post.
“We are in desperate need of more vaccines and in desperate need of more treatment to support the people in our city who deserve health care just like everyone else,” said San Francisco Mayor London Breed
