The mobile phones you should watch out for this summer

The summer holidays are around the corner and many people are probably hoping for sunny weather and lazy days at the beach.

Are you one of them? Then there are a number of things that are good to know. For dog owners, for example, it is important to keep an eye on the dangers lurking in the reeds, which may look harmless to the naked eye.

Bathing areas are also a popular home for bathing fleas, also known as water fleas. They are small larvae that develop into an intestinal worm found in seabirds.

They swim along the surface of the water and can mistake people for birds. Then they can sit on, or penetrate under people’s skin when bathing.

Many beachgoers take their mobile phones to the beach – but did you know that there are some models that can handle both water and dust worse than others?

You can see how durable your mobile phone is by looking at its IP classification. This year, one of the most common IP ratings for smartphones is IP68 – but what does that mean? In an article on Wired you break down the scale.

Resistance to water and dust

“After the first two letters of the rating, the next character is the level of resistance to dust and external objects. This scale goes from 0 to 6. According IEC’s rating guide a 5 means ‘dust protected’ and a 6 means ‘dust tight'”, they write in the article.

The last character indicates how water resistant the mobile phone is, that scale extends from 0 to 9. A smartphone with a water rating of 7 survives for a short time in shallow water of a maximum of one meter. The models with rating 8 can handle between two and six meters of water depth – it varies between the different mobile providers.

Which iPhones are the least waterproof?

On Apple devices, several models, including the iPhone 7, iPhone 8, X and XR, have received the lower IP67 rating. According to Apple’s website, these phones cannot be in water for longer than a maximum of 30 minutes, at a maximum depth of one meter.

All newer models are rated IP68. Here you can take part in the entire range of Apple website.

When it comes to Android phones, both Google’s Pixel 8 and 8 Pro are rated IP68. The same goes for the majority of all Samsung phones back to the S7 series.

However, owners of the new Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold are right to be vigilant, according to Wired. These models have received a water rating of 8, but have not tested dust protection.

These mobiles have received the IPX8 classification, where X stands for the missing rating for dust protection.
