Senior Narrative Designer Lula Lucent talked about what changes are coming to the main story quest of the MMORPGS New World in the latest video on YouTube. With Season 5, the “Season of the Guardian”, there are supposed to be some changes.
What content is there in Season 5?
The “Rise of the Angry Earth” expansion resulted in some logic gaps and changes to the story, so that the development team decided to adapt the main story in several steps in the first year of the MMORPG. With Season 5, the story finally reaches its final stage and will be as the developers now imagine it.
These changes are being made to the New World story
So far, some NPCs that suddenly take part in certain missions or can be found in certain areas have been revised. Unfortunately, the team only had a limited amount of time to do this, so the developers had to fine-tune what content they wanted to change.
For Lucent, the process was a mess:
Take the best elements we already have, repurpose them and lean into them. […] We knew where our penultimate arc took place, Ebonscale. We knew where the absolute end would be, Shattered Mountain. I worked backwards, starting from our current locations and assets and trying to give them life and meaning.
Lucent said that the narrative framework had to be approved by the team before individual NPCs could be replaced and resources requested.
An example of a coming change is Isabella and her vision of herself as the savior of humanity. The development team tried to make her appear even more threatening and in an even more commanding position. Thanks to Rise of the Angry Earth, this revision is necessary.
Adiana Theron is also an NPC who will be getting a makeover. After the updates introduced after her first appearance, it makes no sense to include her so directly in the main story.
Ebonscale and Shattered Mountain will receive the biggest reworks. Here the plot is rewritten and NPCs are replaced. Some of them will be completely new, while others will have been given a new role thanks to different content.
In general, the team has made sure that the updates are even more in line with the Rise of the Angry Earth expansion. You can find a suitable video for the expansion here:

When will the final revision of the main story come? New World will get the final touches to the main story on March 12, 2023. Because on the same day the 5th season “Season of the Guardian” will be released.
