Part of the public pension is actually based on the pensioner’s marital status.

The general pension consists of income pension, income pension supplement, premium pension and guarantee pension.

The latter functions as a basic protection and today it is almost half of all pensioners in Sweden who collect the guaranteed pension – but it is affected by the civil status.

If you get married at an older age, the guaranteed pension can be reduced by as much as SEK 800 a month. That means Trifa Chirehpension economist at Länsförsäkringar, to TV4 Nyheterna.

– If both receive money from the guarantee pension, it will be large sums, she says.

A pensioner who has had an income of SEK 33,000 a month during the time he worked receives a general pension of SEK 22,000 – and SEK 800 can then play a big role, according to Chireh.

– In a year, it will be almost SEK 10,000 per person. If there are two of you in this relationship, you lose quite a lot of money.

The pension economist: “It also lowers costs”

She recommends that you contact the Swedish Pensions Agency to find out how much money it might involve, in case you were to move in together.

However, Chireh does not discourage retirees from getting married.

– Getting married and moving in together also lowers costs. Then the costs are shared. Love and relationships give joy in life that money cannot measure, she says TV4.
