Education Minister Lotta Edholm (L) opens up to tightening the legislation regarding checks on prospective school staff. It is a question of reviewing whether more crimes should be included in the extract from the register that the job seeker presents to the employer.

– There is reason to look at whether the legislation needs to be supplemented, so that, for example, weapon crimes and assaults are also visible in the register excerpts for the school, says Edholm to Sydsvenskan.

The newspaper has reported that those convicted of violent and drug crimes have been employed as assistants in Malmö’s schools. Edholm says that this must be seen against the background of today’s gang crime.

– You can imagine that school employees with a criminal background use their workplace as a recruitment base, then it is really serious, she says to Sydsvenskan.

Today’s rules mean that those applying for a job in the school system are checked for murder, manslaughter, aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, kidnapping, sex crimes and child pornography crimes. Minor violent crimes or drunk driving with multiple offenses are not checked.
