After the announcement that the regime in Syria has fallen, Sweden Democrats party leader Jimmie Åkesson writes on X that it is a good opportunity for Syrians who are celebrating to return to their homeland.
“Unfortunately, it speaks volumes that Syria has now emerged from the ashes of the fire because destructive Islamist forces are behind the change of power. I note that there are groups that are happy about this here in Sweden. You should see this as a good opportunity to go home,” he writes and continues:
“New situations also require new assessments. Therefore, it is important that the residence permits are reviewed for the individuals who have chosen to move from Syria to Sweden. I will also raise the issue of tighter ID checks with the government to strengthen the Swedish border in the event of a potential wave of refugees”
Stenergard: “The advice is the sharpest possible”
Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard has on Sunday urged the Swedes who, despite the Foreign Ministry’s advice, are in Syria to leave the country immediately.
– Our advice is the sharpest possible, says Stenergard i Agenda.
– It is a very uncertain situation. You should not travel there. There are also very limited opportunities to get help.
She also believes that the issue of reconsidered residence permits has been raised too soon.
– According to EU law, which we agree on, it is required that there is a lasting improvement and we don’t know that yet. It’s an hour by hour change so it’s too early to tell.
Andersson (S): “Risk of victory cheers getting stuck in the throat”
Social Democrats party leader Magdalena Andersson also highlights the uncertain situation in Syria:
– There is a risk that this victory celebration gets stuck in the throat, depending on how the development turns out. It is a very unstable and uncertain situation, she says in Agenda.
SVT has sought Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who via his press secretary refers to Maria Malmer Stenergard.
