The mind behind WoW’s golden age is making a new fantasy MMORPG starring Blizzard’s ex-girlfriend

Greg Street was the mind behind the balance of the MMORPG World of Warcraft during the golden age of WoW from 2008 to 2013. He then worked for Riot Games on League of Legends and a new MMORPG in the world of LoL. Now he is planning his own fantasy MMORPG codenamed Ghost. To do this, he works with NetEase, the Chinese company that had a terrible falling out with Blizzard.

Who is this?

  • Most WoW fans will know Greg Street as “Ghostcrawler,” his heraldic animal being a ghost crab. Therefore, it is certainly no coincidence that his new fantasy MMORPG is codenamed “Ghost”.
  • Street was the lead system designer at Blizzard from 2008 to 2013, when WoW was still one of the most relevant games in the world: he was responsible for the balance and design of the classes.
  • In the time since, he worked for Riot Games first on LoL and then on an MMORPG in the world of League of Legends.

Street left Riot after strokes of fate during Corona

Why is he away from Riot Games? There were suggestions in March 2023 that Street had left his MMORPG project in League of Legends early because he realized during the Corona epidemic that he wanted to spend more time with his family after suffering “devastating losses” there . In December 2022 he made it public that his father and brother had died (via Twitter).

However, Riot Games probably couldn’t accommodate him as much as he wanted when it came to working from home, so he left Riot Games, moved back in with his family and founded his own studio. He announced this in March 2023.

This is what he says today:

The trademark of “Fantastic Pixel Castle”, Street’s new studio, should also be to rely on “remote work”. Here you want to hire the best employees you can get, regardless of location.

We are a fully remote studio, which allows us to hire the best game developers, and we plan to stay small so we can adapt and revise our design quickly. We want to show the game to the community early and often to ensure we’re on the right track and to incorporate constant feedback.

This is possible because NetEase is a strategic partner that understands our vision and gives us the creative freedom, resources and support needed to be successful.

Who is his partner? He is making the game together with the Chinese gaming giant NetEase, which was Blizzard’s partner in China until a few months ago, before parting ways in a dispute and with a lot of drama.

NetEase says Street’s team includes former developers of WoW, LoL and Guild Wars 2.

What do you want to show? They plan to reveal the new fantasy MMORPG Ghost on November 8th at 7 p.m. on Twitch.

In January, the MMORPG WoW died in China because Blizzard separated from NetEase:
