An important symbolic threshold, especially since the competition is tough, especially with the release of Super Mario Bros The Movie, also on display since April 5, 2023, and which has taken up all the media space in recent days. It must be said that the film is the subject of great debate on the Internet, because of the difference between the very average press opinions on the Nintendo film and the (far too) dythirambic spectator opinions. Obviously, The Three Musketeers is not intended for the same audience, but Martin Bourboulon’s film has also been cut to appeal to as many people as possible. With a budget of 72 million euros (excluding marketing and for both parties), The Three Musketeers is a big gamble for Pathé, which has also taken a big risk to reclaim the work of Alexandre Dumas. It must indeed be remembered that it has been more than 60 years since France adapted the famous French novel, leaving English and Americans to offer their vision of the close guard of Louis XIII.

With such a budget, what is the break-even point for the film? For the moment, the figures are quite vague, no one having dared to communicate on it, unlike Asterix & Obelix The Middle Kingdom, which has also played tricks on it. But since we know that Guillaume Canet’s film had to exceed 6 million tickets sold in France to cover its costs (the film cost 66 million euros), we can then estimate a cap at 8 million tickets for the two parts of The Three Musketeers so that Pathé does not lose money. For our part, we had not seen such an ambitious and spectacular French film since The Pact of the Wolves by Christophe Gans, which ended its run with more than 5 million admissions in France.
