Large parts of Sweden are covered in snow when the first day of the new year has begun.
At the same time, SMHI issues several weather warnings.
– It will be difficult, says our meteorologist Ulrika Elvgren.
During New Year’s Eve, snow fell in several places around the country and many woke up to a snow-covered first day of the new year.
– We have a wintry week ahead of us. Perhaps to the delight of some, at least to me. I like real seasons, but it will be difficult, says our meteorologist Ulrika Elvgren.
Warning for snow
SMHI has several warnings out. An area west of Lake Vänern receives a yellow warning, where it is expected to snow between 7 and 15 centimeters.
– Right now, it is the snow that is being warned about and not the slip, but there may be new warnings, says Ulrika Elvgren.
In addition, warnings have been issued east of Lake Vänern where it is expected to snow just as heavily and heavily in Östergötland, Närke and Sörmland. A weather warning for thunderstorms in southern Skåne has also been issued.
– It will be icy for the next 24 hours, says Ulrika Elvgren.
Among many ski resorts to the north, there is instead lighter snowfall with a thick cloud cover, but which will loosen up during the day.
– It’s fantastic skiing weather in Hemavan, in the Lapland mountains and in many ski resorts it’s double-digit minus temperatures.
More snow this week
During New Year’s Day, even more snow is expected in the south. It subsides during Thursday night when instead a new blanket of snow moves in over the north. There will be more snow ahead of the weekend.
– Now that it’s this cold, you have to take out the warm clothes and underwear, says Ulrika.
But she also calls for extra vigilance, especially for those in the south.
– Those who are going to the ski resorts must be extra careful, especially over southern Sweden where the boundary between plus and minus degrees is small.
