The Japanese anime company Studio Ghibli has released some of the most celebrated films ever since the 80s, such as Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle or My Neighbor Totoro.

With The Last Fireflies by Isao Takahata, one of the earliest and at the same time most haunting productions is now appearing on September 8th new on Blu-ray in a chic steel book and is available available for pre-order on Amazon *. As bonus material there is an interview with Isao Takahata, a making-of and a conversation with the film crew.

That’s what The Last of the Fireflies is about

In the last year of the war, 1945, Japan is increasingly ravaged by American bombers and in the inferno of such an attack, fourteen-year-old Seita and four-year-old Setsuko lose their mother. The children are now completely on their ownsince the father has long been at war.

Although the two initially stay with relatives, the tense food situation does not exactly make the additional mouths welcome when they are in need. Therefore, Seita and Setsuko move into an abandoned bunker and try to be on their own survive in the harsh turmoil of unrelenting war.

‘The Last Fireflies’ is rightly considered one of the saddest films of all time. The film is a harrowing, deeply moving masterpiece that does full justice to the subject of the deprivation and suffering of the civilian population in times of war.

With a rating of 7.8 out of 10, The Last Glowworm is also one of the best-reviewed films in the Moviepilot community and is therefore undoubtedly worth recommending.
