The new movie of the MCU, The Marvels, made a low start in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by failing to achieve the expected box office success in its opening week.
Superhero movie “The Marvels” shattered opening records for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking in just $47 million in its first weekend in the United States. This unexpected drop marked the lowest opening of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Marvels: MCU Suffered a Surprising Drop in Box Office Revenues!
“The Marvels,” a sequel starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris, notably fell short of the opening success of the first film. Film analyst David A Gross stated that there was a 67% drop compared to the opening of the first movie and stated that “This is an opening drop unprecedented in Marvel cinema”, expressing how low the success was. He also added that there was a production cost of $220 million for the film and it’s a long way to make up for that drop. However, the reason for this decline is not fully understood. Factors such as declining interest in superhero movies, the growth of streaming services, and actor strikes may be at play.
While other superhero movies, especially “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, have better openings, the low performance of “The Marvels” draws attention. Some critics argue that superhero movies are now over-consumed by audiences and are far from innovative.
“The Marvels” follows Captain Marvel as she tries to save the universe with the help of Ms. Marvel and Captain Monica Rambeau. However, critics have mixed reviews for the film.
As a result, “The Marvels” failed to achieve the expected box office success, causing a surprise decline for the MCU and raising question marks about the future of superhero movies.
