Both story elements exist in The Last of Us and the new The Walking Dead series Daryl Dixon. Horror fans want to have suspected plagiarism.

“The biggest The Last of Us plagiarism” is what it says on X (formerly Twitter) about the Daryl Dixon series, or “Looks a lot like The Last of Us. Looks like a copy“. Another fan writes: “So it’s The Last of Us, but with Daryl and in France“.

The new The Walking Dead series revolves around franchise favorite Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), who gets to know the zombie epidemic in France on a European trip. He also meets the young Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi), whom he supposed to accompany humanity through dangerous terrain as the supposed savior of humanity.

Daryl Dixon producer Greg Nicotero noticed the parallels to Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), but too late. He revealed to Entertainment Weekly:
I watched the first episode of The Last of Us and was like, “Uh, guys?” but by then we were already deep into it [TWD-]Production. [Die Serien] are different enough to like both. […] [Daryl] wants to protect the child, but that is not his only goal.

Even if there are clear parallels between the two series, the influence of The Last of Us is on The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, if present at all, only minimally. Nicotero’s series has been in planning for around six years.
