The main reason to avoid an electric car — for

We Car Owners has released the results of its annual survey Autoindex, where car owners get to express themselves about their cars.

The survey, in which over 12,000 people answered, also provides an image of which fuel the Swedish car owners’ next car should be powered by, and why.

On average, 20 percent answered that their next car will be powered by gasoline, while 30 percent want an electric car as their next car.

That’s why Swedes buy electric cars

The survey not only reveals the reasons that Swedish car owners see for not getting an electric car, but also the reasons that speak for an electric car purchase.

The main reason for buying an electric car, according to those who already own one, is that you want to do something for the environment. The possibility of charging the car at home is also attractive.

It is also believed that the silence of the engine when driving is a strong buying argument. Two fifths of those who want an electric car as their next car already have one at the moment.

The arguments against buying an electric car

In its survey, Vi Bilägare also points to the main reasons that Swedish car buyers do not choose an electric car as an electric car.

65 percent respond that the prices of electric cars are the biggest reason for not buying one. Should the government introduce a new electric car bonus, which gives lower prices for electric cars, close to 64 percent of the respondents would have been able to imagine an electric car.

Financial incentives such as tax breaks and free charging are also highly valued.

Many would have been able to imagine an electric car if it cost as much as an equivalent petrol car. Of those who own an electric car today, 60 percent think that an electric car can have the same price as a corresponding gasoline car, or even cost 10 percent more.

Range and charge weigh heavily

Those who do not yet feel that they can switch to an electric car also highlight range and charging as important arguments, as well as the fact that electric cars are difficult to own due to these factors.

An electric car to be attractive to them must have a range of 50 to 70 miles, or more. The electric car must also charge quickly, and be able to top up with a range of 20 miles in no more than 20 minutes.

Only 2 percent state that they opt out of electric cars because they are boring to drive. 12 percent of Swedish car owners state that they would never, regardless of the argument, consider buying an electric car.

These car owners want an electric car

The survey also shows how those who can imagine buying an electric car as their next car are distributed across different car brands.

Those who are most convinced that the next car will be an electric car are the Tesla owners, where a whopping 90 percent say they will choose an electric car as their next car.

At the other end of the scale we find Subaru owners, where only 11 percent would choose an electric car as their next car.
