We all know those days when everything just goes wrong. But most of us do not give in to the first impulse of aggression and move into the War against society. But that’s exactly what happens in Falling Down – a normal day that you can watch on TV today.
TV tip: This is what Falling Down with Michael Douglas is about
The unemployed engineer William Foster (Michael Douglas) actually just wants to bring his daughter a birthday present. But her mother has issued a restraining order and he is stuck in a traffic jam anyway. Nothing is moving forward or backward and on top of that it is incredibly hot in Los Angeles. Then William decides to get out, leave the car and continue on foot.
On the way he meets all sorts of illustrious characters, all of whom get on his nerves. Although he wants to remain peaceful, this is made very difficult for him. Little by little William takes his fate into his own hands and lets his anger run free. Things really get out of hand when he accidentally comes into possession of a whole bag full of firearms.
Falling Down paints the picture of a desperate man who is pushed to the limit by society
Life in the 1990s may seem almost idyllic from today’s perspective, but even then it was marked by Everyday racism, social coldness, injustice and capitalism. When real assholes with massive deficits come together, things can quickly get to the extreme. Falling Down follows one of these assholes as he increasingly loses his temper.
The film always walks a fine line. To a certain extent, we can all understand very well what is going on in William “D-Fens” Foster’s mind. The real satire is excellently executed with plenty of suspense, grandiose acting and garnished with a lot of black humor.
