Chinese-born Tom (Brandon Soo Hoo) lives in San Francisco and already has his hands full trying to survive high school. But it happens, as it has to happen in so many fantasy stories: one day he learns that his family is a… ancient secret guards. And that he is capable of so much more than he ever imagined.
After his grandmother’s anything but natural death, Tom learns that she was the guardian of a real phoenix egg. Now he has to follow in her footsteps. For this he becomes the Disciple of a powerful mentor, that’s the magic formula for aspiring main characters. But Tom doesn’t just receive a teacher. He is assisted by a total of twelve shapeshifters in the form of Chinese zodiac signs.

Among other things, Tom’s journey takes him to the Dragon Kingdom deep at the bottom of the ocean and to the front lines of a full-scale magical war.
