The Lord of the Rings is one of the most popular franchises of all time, but The Rings of Power series fails to make all fans of the universe happy. The adaptation also raises questions that it has not yet clarified even with two seasons. The mystics are a mystery.
Spoiler alert: The following article talks about events from the first two seasons of The Rings of Power.
Who are the mystics? The mystics appear for the first time in the series themselves. They are some kind of cultists. These include The Dweller, played by Birdie Sisson, The Ascetic, played by Kalo Kopae and The Nomad, played by Edith Poor.
In the first season, her goal is to find the stranger who appeared through mysterious circumstances. However, in these and subsequent episodes of The Rings of Power, hardly anything was explained about the backgrounds of the mystics. But there are theories that could explain its connection to the later films.
You can find a trailer for season 2 here:
Do the mystics have something to do with the Nazgûl?
Who could the mystics be? Not much is known about the mystics even after 2 seasons. They work together with the dark wizard, an evil Istari. Also, they are looking for the stranger because they mistakenly thought he was Sauron.
As 3DJuegos reports, one of the big theories about the mystics is that they could have something to do with the Ringwraiths from The Lord of the Rings. Aside from her appearance, with the robes and her connection to Sauron, her death is said to be an important indication of the connection.
This is even discussed in an interview at Variety with the showrunners of the series, JDPayne and Matrick McKay. This is what the mystics look like in death, like the Nazgûl, the ringwraiths from The Lord of the Rings. The stranger, similar to Frodo after he wears the ring, looks at a kind of spectral world in which the true form of things can be seen.
This is to show that the true form of the mystics is not the human one seen in The Rings of Power.
McKay mentions that the mystics come from Rhûn. They mention possible cults that Tolkien himself also wrote about.
In the interview, however, no connection is made between the Ringwraiths and the mystics. However, McKay mentions that a different kind of magic could be returned in later seasons. McKay also says about the mystics that they are less good at magic than magicians.
Another visual indication also seems to be the indicated crown that the leader of the mystics, The Dweller, wears on her head when she dies. It’s probably reminiscent of the Witch King of Angmar.
Whether the mystics have anything to do with the Ringwraiths, we will only find out in the later seasons, if at all. The series is not really popular with many fans. It doesn’t always stick exactly to the original material. An important battle was also shortened: “The Rings of Power” shows an epic battle by Tolkien only superficially and thus omits an important turning point
