The longest running fantasy series will be canceled after 5 years

The animated fantasy series Disenchantment stems from an era in which Netflix expanded relentlessly across all genres and commissioned series after series. Especially in the animation area, the streaming service has recently reduced its output significantly.

Launched in August 2018, the series by Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons and Futurama, is now getting a proper conclusion after 5 seasons. In the midst of countless and early Netflix cancellations, that’s a rarity.

Netflix ends disenchantment after 5 seasons: All information about the start

Netflix promised a lot from Matt Groening’s new series project. The Netflix series was far from becoming a pop culture phenomenon like the stories of the yellow family from Springfield or the Planet Express crew. There was never any real hype, but new seasons or parts, as Netflix calls them, appeared regularly in the years that followed.

On September 1, 2023, the 5th and final season of Disenchantment will start. The fantasy story, originally designed for six seasons, ends earlier than originally planned. Now the story is brought to a conclusion with 10 final episodes.

Disenchantment is Netflix’s longest-running fantasy series, only surpassed by The Dragon Prince. This started a few months later, but will continue for a few more years and will even end up with a whopping 7 seasons.

What is Disenchantment about?

Disenchantment is the main setting the medieval fantasy kingdom of Dreamland, in which the rebellious Princess Bean is to be married. But she has other plans and embarks on an adventurous journey with the elf Elfo and the demon Luci.

As the story progresses, Bean evolves from a reluctant and always drunk princess to a fearless rebel and leader. Their journey takes them to the farthest reaches of the kingdom of Steamland, through underwater realms, to the depths of hell.

Disenchantment is unique in that (unlike The Simpsons and Futurama) an ongoing story told, whose status quo is regularly turned completely upside down. In the grand finale, Bean and her allies must face off against their evil (and married to the devil!) mother, Dagmar, to save Dreamland. And of course an ancient prophecy also plays an important role.
