Henrik Larsson was not only many people’s favorite player in Sweden.
He became a cult player for Celtic.
And this list is further proof of how immensely popular he remains in Scotland.
For a few years, Henrik Larsson was one of the world’s absolute best goalscorers. The move to Celtic came in 1997 and it wasn’t long before he showed his top qualities, absolutely pouring in goals for the Scottish club. In total, there were 315 games and a completely meaningless 242 goals for Larsson during the years at Celtic.
Larsson is also remembered for having been a reliable goalscorer in the national team, but it was still at Celtic that he made the biggest impression in his career, and to this day the Swede is classed as one of the absolute greatest players in the club’s storied history. Add to that that Larsson also made short but extremely memorable and talked about stays in both Manchester United and Barcelona.
Perhaps the main proof of how big and popular Larsson still is in Scotland came just a few years ago, when the website OLBG released a special list, in which Henrik Larsson completely slaughtered all opposition, according to the Scottish site The Scotsman. OLBG themselves went through tens of thousands of different social media posts, measuring everything from interactions, reach and sentimental value of the text, in search of the most popular player to ever wear the number 7 in football.

It was with jersey number 7 on his back that Larsson grew into a world-class striker at Celtic, and when he won the Ballon d’Or as Europe’s best goalscorer. And even though it’s been more than 20 years since he left Celtic, he’s still, according to OLBG, Britain’s favorite number seven in football history, and that’s saying a lot…
Henrik Larsson topped the list before Kevin Keegan, one of Liverpool’s absolute greatest, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who had his big breakthrough at Manchester United before becoming one of the greatest footballers of all time. Players such as David Beckham, Raul and Luis Figo were also on the list – but no one could compete with Henrik Larsson.
