– I am currently quite far from the fires, about 40 kilometers away, but they are clearly visible here at our hotel, reached by Ylen from Corfu late on Sunday evening Iida Leino tells.
Leino is vacationing in the town of Gouvia on the east coast in the middle of the Greek island. There, people continue their lives as normal, and no instructions have been given in case of fires.
– We have not received any kind of instructions here on the spot. Even the hotel just said, the fire is really far away, and there shouldn’t be a problem. The direction of the wind moves so that the fire shouldn’t reach us, but it does look really fierce, Leino says.
During Sunday and early night, the northern parts of the island of Corfu have been evacuated from the path of wildfires, according to the Greek Broadcasting Company of ERT including Vigglatouri, Nissaki, Barbati, Porta, Megoula, Sinies, Santa and Old Perithia.
Iida Leino and her travel companions have flown to Corfu for a week’s vacation through Apollomatki this weekend, but they have already been thinking about returning home earlier than next Saturday. Especially as the evening darkens, the flames spreading in the distance stand out worryingly clearly.
– Yes, we’ve already looked a bit here to see if we should leave here earlier, Leino thinks.
