the life expectancy of babies in 2022 could exceed 90

The life expectancy of the French continues to lengthen. According to an INSEE study which was published this Thursday, November 10, the average life expectancy of babies born in 2022 has increased by 37 years for women and 42 years for men compared to the generation born in 1900.

Babies born in 2022 can statistically expect to live to be 93 for girls and 90 for boys. Figures which correspond to a central scenario, since they were calculated by INSEE on the assumption that mortality risks will continue to decline in the future at the same rate as during the decade 2010-2019.

But other scenarios are possible. If, in the future, the risk of mortality decreases less rapidly, the life expectancy for the generation born this year could then peak at 88 years for women and 86 years for men. Conversely, if the fall in the risk of mortality accelerates, women could then expect to live on average to age 99 and to age 96 for men.

Projections which are undoubtedly likely to resurface soon in the public debate, in particular for the question of the reform of the pensions or in the debate on the end of life.
