Unsurprisingly, the Law Committee of the National Assembly overwhelmingly rejected this Wednesday, October 2, by 54 votes to 15, the proposal for the dismissal of Emmanuel Macron. It was filed by La France Insoumise thanks to article 68 of the Constitution, the party criticizing the head of state for not having respected the result of the legislative elections by appointing Michel Barnier Prime Minister.
This text aims to bring the president before the two combined chambers of Parliament with a view to dismissal for “failure to fulfill his duties manifestly incompatible with the exercise of his mandate”. Only elected officials from rebellious, communist and environmental groups voted in favor.
The next step, the examination of the text in the hemicycle, must begin no later than the 13th day following Wednesday’s vote, according to the law. However, it will be up to the conference of presidents of the National Assembly to decide on the date of this examination.
“Ensure the voice of the people is respected”
At the opening of the debates, LFI deputy Antoine Léaument called on his colleagues to “ensure the voice of the people is respected” by “putting a premature end to the authoritarianism of the president (Emmanuel Macron)”. “In democracy, we do not respect elections only when we are satisfied with the result. We respect them, period. But Mr. Macron does not like democracy,” he lambasted.
Several speakers, from the centrist ranks, the right, the RN or the socialists, however, stressed that this proposal had very little chance of being adopted ultimately, since it would have to be approved by both parties. third of parliamentarians, deputies and senators combined.
Former Macronist minister Aurore Bergé thus criticized “a communication stunt” and a “farce” on the part of the rebels, while Philippe Schreck, for the RN group, saw it as a “posture, even an imposture”. For PS deputy Hervé Saulinac, “yes, the president mishandled our institutions”, but this “does not constitute a breach of his duties”, and deputies must therefore “not respond to an abuse of power with another abuse of power”.
