The legendary creator of Final Fantasy is asked if he wants to work on the MMORPG – the answer inspires the audience

At the Final Fantasy

This is the situation:

  • Final Fantasy is one of the most successful game series in the world: the first part was released in 1987 for the NES.
  • The creator of the series is Hironobu Sakaguchi, who is now 60 years old. He led the development of the first five Final Fantasy games and worked on the series until Final Fantasy X-2 in 2003, most recently as executive producer.
  • At the MMORPG Fan Festival in London, Sakaguchi took part in a panel together with the head of the MMORPG Naoki Yoshida. The Final Fantasy grandees answered questions from the audience on stage.
  • The highlight of the Fanfest was a new class for the MMORPG:

Creator of Final Fantasy has been in MMORPG fever since 2021

That was the question: It’s well known how much Sakaguchi loves the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. As of 2021, he spent 12 hours a day on FF 14. He shared his experiences and assessments of the game on Twitter at the time.

At the panel, Sakaguchi was asked by fans in the audience whether he would like to work on the MMORPG a bit; other veterans of the game series have already done that, such as Yasumi Matsuno, who worked on raids for Shadowbringers.

This is what the Creator answered: When asked about the advances to work on the MMORPG, the father of the series responded spontaneously and quickly:

Absolutely no way! If I make this part of my job, I’ll know what’s going on behind the scenes and won’t be able to enjoy the content if I create it myself. So no offense, but no!

This is how the hall reacted: There was already laughter from the audience during the translation. The hall applauded frenetically and laughed at the 60-year-old’s answer.

The head of the MMORPG, Naoki Yoshida, didn’t want to admit defeat so quickly. He added that he thought it would be fantastic to work with Sakaguchi, but that he wouldn’t pressure him. Spurred on by a reaction from the audience, Yoshida suggested that perhaps the forefather could be lured into development by designing small bits of content: a bit of seasonal content.

“Of course not,” came the rejection again – this time even in English, much to the delight of the audience.

At 8:12 hours, the segment begins with an audience question:

How is this discussed? There is a lot of sympathy for the 60-year-old on Reddit. People know there too. When you turn your hobby into a career, it becomes increasingly difficult to enjoy it: “If you get too close to the development, it ruins the magic.”

Gabe Newell already said that his favorite Valve game was Portal 2. He hardly worked on it and only provided a bit of advice.
