After the tragic announcement that the icon Margareta Bönström has passed away.
She was known by the nickname “The Bean” and lived to be 93 years old.

Today came the news that one of the really big profiles of Swedish tennis has passed away. The legendary leader Margareta Bönström has fallen asleep and she was 93 years old.

The career of the bean

She began her career in tennis as a player, reaching the third round at both Wimbledon and the US Open. The Swede became known as “The Bean” and also won a SM gold.

But it was after his playing career that Bönström really left his big mark on Swedish tennis. She fought hard for women’s tennis and has a big part in Sweden getting its first WTA tournament in Båstad in 1987, thanks to Margareta who was one of the pioneers in the women’s Pro Council.

Icon dead

The tennis icon has long been classified as one of Swedish tennis’s “Grand old lady” who also became the first female member of the Swedish Tennis Association in the early 70s.
“Margareta Bönström is the one who has mattered the most, historically speaking, when it comes to paving the way for female tennis leaders and women’s competitions in Sweden. So we wanted to pay tribute to her,” said Linda Jansson in the Malmen tennis club during a tribute a few years ago, see the video below.

Margareta Bönström’s great deeds for tennis have been highly praised over the years and she has been awarded the association’s highest award, the so-called Silver Plaque. In 2013, she was also inducted into the Swedish tennis “Hall of Fame”.

Now the legend in Swedish tennis is being mourned. The association has paid attention to the late Margareta on its official Facebook page.
“One of the great leaders of Swedish tennis, Margareta Bönström, has left us”, they write in the post, see it below.

In TSK Malmen, they wanted to do something extra at this year’s club championship. On Saturday evening, the club had therefore invited Swedish tennis “Grand Old Lady” Margareta Bönström, to pay tribute to one of the great profiles of Swedish tennis.
