The least we can say is that this company is not experiencing the crisis! To reward her employees for their efforts, she decided to offer them the equivalent of five months’ salary. A very nice bonus!
Inflation has hit economic markets around the world hard, leading to “workforce reshuffles,” “team restructurings” and “strategy adjustments” – including layoffs and budget cuts – at companies. No one, big or small, is spared! Well, none, with the exception of one airline, which is clearly not experiencing the crisis!
After experiencing a period of scarcity during the pandemic, where tourism was drastically interrupted, this sector is back on track, in defiance of all the recommendations of environmentalists and calls for sobriety. One of these airlines in particular, Emirates Group Airlines, has had a particularly lucrative year. According to its reports, the company recorded a 71% increase in annual profits, which therefore amounted to some $5 billion.
Of this amount, €4.7 billion came from Emirates airline division alone, an increase of 63% compared to the previous year. Record profits – in a sector where flying is becoming an increasingly problematic means of transport in a world gripped by an ecological crisis – allowed the company’s president and CEO to act of generosity and share part of these profits with all of its staff.
Also, the company announced that it will pay some of its 112,406 employees, spread across 84 countries, an additional bonus equivalent to five months’ salary, or twenty weeks. Last year, 50,000 of them were entitled to a similar bonus. This premium “is a recognition of the dedication, hard work and sacrifices of our employees, including pay reductions during the pandemic.” A generous way to reward them for their “heroic efforts to achieve our collective ambitions”.
As you can imagine, this gift was very well received by the main stakeholders. Even if they emphasized that the bonus was less significant than that of the previous year, which corresponded to six months’ salary!
But this sharing is not without ulterior motives, as Emirates seeks to increase its workforce by recruiting thousands of cabin crew, pilots, engineers, customer service agents and IT specialists, in order to further consolidate its position and its economic recovery, after a sluggish period during the pandemic. We can bet that this kind of salary advantage will motivate candidates!
