The Algerian League for the Defense of Human Rights (LADDH) announces that it has learned of its dissolution on social networks. A dissolution decided on the basis of a judgment rendered, she said, six months ago, without her knowledge, after a trial held in her absence.
According to Saïd Salhi, vice-president of the LADDH, it was the Ministry of the Interior that took legal action accusing the League of its advocacy work, its reports sent to international organizations and its closeness to the Hirak, a pro-citizen movement. -democracy of 2019.
” We discovered, with great astonishment, on social networks, a judgment that already dates back to June 29, 2022, explains Saïd Salhi, joined by Amelie Tuletfrom the Africa editorial staff. This judgment was made public in September. Only us, at the LADDH, we were not informed, we were not seized!
This trial took place against the accused, without the presence of the League or its lawyers, so the League did not have the opportunity to defend itself, did not have the opportunity to respond fairly to the accusations of the ministry inside.
In any case, this dissolution is part of a broad repression that has already affected civil society organizations, several opposition parties are the subject of legal proceedings for dissolution. The hardening did not start today, it is a serious slip. Today they got rid of the League, they got rid of the last witness of repression in Algeria. »
The Algerian League for the Defense of Human Rights, founded in 1985, was authorized four years later, in 1989, in Algeria. She plans to appeal the judgment.
Moreover, still in Algeria, journalist Ihsane El-Kadi is still in pre-trial detention (he was arrested on December 29) and his media group has been closed. This arrest at the end of December was in addition to the closure of media and the convictions of other Algerian journalists in recent months.
