Optional update KB5014668 rolled out by Microsoft to Windows 11 PCs is causing the Start menu to crash on some machines.

If you have just finished installing the latest Windows 11 updates, it is quite possible that the Start menu has become unresponsive. The BK5014668 update deployed a few days ago by the Redmond firm is indeed the cause of a nasty bug that prevents the Windows 11 Start menu from working properly. The information was confirmed by Microsoft in a technical document published on its website.

“After installing update KB5014668 or later updates, we received reports that a small number of devices may not be able to open the Start menu. On affected devices, clicking or selecting the Start button, or using the Windows key on your keyboard, may have no effect.” indicates the firm.

However, Microsoft has a solution for this problem. The company suggests that businesses and individuals alike deploy a Known Issue Rollback (KIR), in other words recovery of known issues. This feature, unveiled a little over a year ago, restores Windows to a working state when a problem occurs after applying an update.

“This issue is resolved using Known Issues Rollback (KIR). Please note that it may take up to 24 hours for the resolution to automatically propagate to consumer devices and unmanaged business devices. Restarting your Windows device may help the resolution apply to your device faster. explains Microsoft in the bug resolution page.

If you are one of the unlucky victims of this bug, you should download and install the known issues restore file put online by Microsoft, to settle this damage. Please note that the application of this patch may take up to 24 hours to be fully deployed on the affected machines.
