The Last of Us Part II Remastered review

The Last of Us Part II Remastered review: More than three years after the first story, the remastered version offers the opportunity to discover the game from scratch and evaluate it from a new perspective.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered review: Even if you play some games many times, you never get tired of them. Especially series such as Tomb Raider and Uncharterd impressed me a lot. Last of Us took the world by storm when it first came out, but I couldn’t play it due to motion sickness (which can be called motion sickness. It occurs when the movement you see is different from what your inner ear perceives. This can cause dizziness, nausea and vomiting). I started maybe four or five times, but I could always get to the same point. Then I gave up trying, feeling devastated.

When the Last of Us Remake series was announced, I was very excited because I knew that this time I would be able to play these games that I wanted so much. When I added the code sent by Sony a while ago to my account without any delay and started, I was as happy as a child who bought new shoes. I could play easily. It was like a game I had no knowledge about before. Of course, if you don’t count the spoilers I got…

Last of Us Part 2 Remastered Review / PS5

Last of Us Part 2 was first released for the PS4 platform in 2020. It soon received an update for PS5 users. The update didn’t bring much to the game. There was only 4K support, improved frame rates. However, when it comes to the Remastered version, of course we expect more. Let me say from the beginning, “Yes, it exceeded my expectations.” But don’t let this mislead you. You may think that I’m exaggerating too much because I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. That’s why I’ll try to give as much detail as I can.

The biggest question about The Last of Us 2 Remastered, which will be released on January 19, 2024, is “whether they have to pay again for the PS5 renewal, even if you own the PS4 version.” This is a very controversial issue. The Last of Us 2, which draws attention with its controversial story choices and rich gameplay structure, was released in June 2020, at a time when the whole world was under quarantine due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

New Modes

For most players, The Last of Us 2 was already perfect when it was released on PS4. Following the release of a performance patch in May, we were wondering whether this remake for PS5 would offer any extra value. However, Naughty Dog manages to surprise us with new game modes and interesting bonuses.

Some of the additions are interesting, although quite minor. For example, guitar mode. It’s a nice touch to be able to play guitar as much as you want using the Dual Sense’s touch pad. There are three characters: Ellie, Joel and the composer of the music, Gustavo Santaolalla. It is possible to unlock various instruments from the game, choose the location where you want to play your songs, and even add effects. Another new mode is the clothes you can wear in the game, such as the Death Stranding t-shirt. Being customizable also positively affects your gaming experience.

In addition, new gameplay modes added to the game increase the level of enjoyment you get. (I watched the original game while Ersin was playing. 🙂 You can read the Last of Us Part 2 review to get more details about the game). Additionally, in the roguelike mode called ‘No Return’, we choose one of eight different characters, fight in various scenarios, and eventually enter a boss fight. There is plenty of content in this mode, and the mechanics of the game are satisfying enough to make this mode not challenging. Unlike many other roguelike games, ‘No Return’ prompts players to be more careful. Simply firing your gun generally does not produce advantageous results.

Lost Levels

There is also a ‘Lost Levels’ mode where you can play three levels removed during the development of the game. There are three different events included in this mode: village festival, sewer and wild boar hunt. Although the village festival and the sewers do not contribute much to the story, it would be nice if the boar hunt was included in the game as it would contribute significantly to Ellie’s character development.

The difficult and winding path of the fight against the boar deserves to be included in the game, especially when we know where this level will be placed in the game. If you want to play with this level, it is important to remember that it is unfinished. While textures, animations, sounds, and dialogue are missing, these levels give you more insight into the story, filled with developer commentary.

Graphics and Controls

We clearly see an evolution in the graphics part. Graphics optimization has been done randomly. We are moving on to native 4K that will please the eye, offering a better frame rate and compatibility with VRR, variable refresh rate for those who want it. While the original version was great, these improvements are enough to take it a few steps further.

When we look at the controls, we see that the PS5 is now completely compatible with the game. The game uses all the features of the console and DualSense. Haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, 3D audio… It’s all seamlessly integrated.

Conclusion

More than three years after The Last of Us Part II’s story was crafted, this remastered version offers a chance to rediscover the product and evaluate it from a new perspective. We have now moved away from the game’s turbulent and rather strange launch rhetoric.

The precision and depth of Naughty Dog’s writing, combined with the deadly scenes presented, deliver an emotional explosion unmatched in this field. Although the game’s story is extremely brutal, it never feels unfair or unpleasant. It’s a feat that keeps the player in a world of trouble, to put it oddly enough. Along with the overall production quality, the acting is also top notch.
