“The last Marvel films have failed”: Deadpool & Wolverine maker is brutally honest and now a new plan is to save the superhero universe

The Marvel big screen universe has seen better days. Of course, we’re still talking about the biggest franchise colossus in cinema history. But looking at the results of the last few MCU films, the glory days of Avengers 4: Endgame are over. Instead, now should Deadpool & Wolverine pull the cart out of the dirt. And provide the basis for a whole new release plan.

Deadpool 3 ushers in a new Marvel era

MCU boss Kevin Feige and Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy recently answered questions from Empire Magazine. Some surprisingly sober sentences were uttered: “The last Marvel films failed because to ignite the world the way many of their predecessors did“explains Levy.”You have to live under a rock not to see that.”

Deadpool & Wolverine comes at an interesting time and represents something completely new, Levy emphasizes the importance of his film for the future of the MCU. While the director enjoys the hope placed in him, Marvel boss Kevin Feige is combative: “I much prefer being the underdog“, he explains. “I prefer to surprise and exceed expectations.“But how exactly is that supposed to happen?

As Variety reports, Marvel is now actually getting serious about long-held plans: the release rate for MCU films and series is to be significantly reduced in the coming years. According to Disney boss Robert A. Iger, in the future no more than three MCU blockbusters and two Disney+ series per year come to the cinema and stream. However, it is not yet clear how this fits in with the various Marvel films that have been announced for 2025.
