Long before the video game Cyberpunk 2077 and the anime adaptation Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the classic Blade Runner founded the “cyberpunk” genre. Heavily influenced by Blade Runner, Masamune created Shirow in 1989 the manga Ghost in the Shellwhich Mamoru Oshii released as an anime film in 1995.
Oshii’s film version wowed sci-fi fans and critics around the world and is still considered a masterpiece and a classic. And as the main inspiration for perhaps the greatest sci-fi spectacle ever. The world in 2029 is different. Most people replace individual body parts with artificial implants and thus become cyborgs. Only the brain cannot yet be completely replaced. Some cyborgs even have a completely artificial body: the shell. The Shell is a biocapsule that contains her personality, identity, and spirit (the eponymous “ghost”).
When the mysterious hacker “Puppetmaster” terrorizes the public by defeating the shells’ defenses and manipulating the Ghost, the government sends Section 9 on him. But it fishes in the dark first, since the victims of the Pupptermaster have no memories of their deeds after they have lost their will and commit crimes for him…
