A woman is seriously injured after being attacked with a knife in central Visby during Almedalen Week.

A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

This is what we know right now about the incident:

  • At 13.50, a man attacked a woman with a knife at Donners place in central Visby. The square is usually crowded with people during Almedalen Week.
  • The woman has been taken to hospital. She has suffered serious injuries, according to the police. People on the scene rushed in and performed first aid until an ambulance arrived and was able to take the woman to hospital.
  • A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The man – wearing glasses, a black jacket and dark work trousers – could be immediately arrested by police officers who were in the vicinity of the crime scene. He wrestled to the ground and was then handcuffed.
  • The police blocked off the square where traces of blood were visible after the act. The motive is still unclear. According to the police, the motive will be investigated in more detail, but states that initially there are no signs of a political connection.
  • The incident occurred right next to a restaurant where party leader Annie Lööf (C) was to hold a press conference. Lööf was immediately taken to safety by Säpo. The press conference was canceled. The Center Party announces that Annie Lööf will hold her Almedal speech as planned tonight.
