The king’s fatal miss during the big Olympic tribute to Armand Duplantis – Carl XVI Gustaf now admits the blunder: “You don’t realize…”

The king paid tribute to Sarah Sjöström with a pun of his own.
But during the tribute to Armand Duplantis, things did not go nearly as well.
Now Carl XVI Gustaf admits the fatal miss during the Olympics in Paris.

What a week it has been Armand Duplantis! On Monday evening, he wrote Swedish sports history with both Olympic gold and a new world record in the pole vault final.

Duplantis gold

Then followed a long and wet party night in Paris where “Mondo” only slept for half an hour. Tuesday was then packed with interviews and public commitments, in the evening the Swedish world star then received his Olympic gold from the icon Sergey Bubka.

On Wednesday, Duplantis left the Olympic bubble and Paris to fly to Greece for a much-deserved vacation with his girlfriend Desire Inglander. But before the golden hero left the summer Olympics, he had time to pay his last respects King Carl XVI Gustaf.

The king’s miss

Because just like double the gold hero Sarah Sjostrom Mondo received a speech dedicated to him by the King at the “Sweden arena” in Paris.
– Now we are here again. You who weren’t here… But the Queen was here, and now we’re here again…, His Majesty begins his speech but then he breaks down.

The king now admits that he had intended to give Armand Duplantis the same pun that Sjöström got with the words: “Now we have two queens on the podium”. But Carl XVI Gustaf failed completely and forgot the words.
– Yes, I had it going but…, he tells Sportbladet and reveals that it went wrong.

Instead, the speech continued like this:
– Now we have the opportunity to celebrate another gold medalist, Armand. It’s fantastic to have you here. It is not only a gold medal, but it is both an Olympic record and – the last – a world record!. By ONE centimeter. He’s a pretty smart young guy. He doesn’t take too much, he only takes a centimeter, but it’s enough, because then you become world champion. He is wise, says the King before the gathered Swedes.
– And what you have put in the work, and worked on your sport, which you love and have been doing all your life. And I hope you can continue and deliver further. I usually say this: “This is just the beginning”. You have no idea what heights he can reach. You don’t know that, we’ll see. So I wish you all the best for the future. But… Now we have to spend a fourfold life together for our latest gold medalist. A four-time long live for the gold medalist, he long live… Hooray, hooray, hooray, hooray!
