“The King of England has no mandate to talk about politics”: letters from L’Express readers

The King of England has no mandate to talk about

An unwelcome royal visit

As if to recall the abolition of the monarchy in France on September 21, 1792, the King of England, who has no mandate for this, comes to talk to us about politics, the environment and the war in Ukraine. The presidential couple, in great complicity, displays their taste for splendor. President Macron is very tactile with the king, his wife kisses the queen and adjusts her cape. In the midst of distress at Restos du coeur and food banks, the dinner at Versailles treats 160 hand-picked guests. The Senate gives an ovation to the one whose presence is explained by his birth alone. Three intense days of luxury, calm and pleasure. Expensive and disconnected in-betweenness. And an unwelcome display. (“Charles III in France: what the British press really thinks“, on lexpress.fr.)

Femicide, not “crime of passion”

I always read with pleasure the “Librairie de l’Express” section, which often gives me ideas for my next readings. But I was very surprised and disappointed to still see the use of the term “crime of passion” to talk about the femicide in the book. The thickness of a hair. Words are important, and using the term “crime of passion” is from another time to describe the murder of a woman by a jealous husband. There is no passion in such an act.
