Sweden’s membership in the NATO defense alliance and its significance. It was one of the main points in King Carl XVI Gustaf’s speech in connection with the opening of the National Assembly.
– It strengthens our defense capability and paves the way for closer cooperation with other allies. NATO’s primary purpose is to secure peace. Sweden can play an important role here, the king said in his speech.
King Carl XVI Gustaf highlighted at the same time that membership is not only about what Sweden can get out of this, but also what the country can give back.
– With this responsibility also comes obligations to defend democracy so that future generations can enjoy the same freedoms and rights as today.
In his speech, the king also highlighted current challenges, not only geopolitical unrest but also climate change, strained healthcare and gang crime. Finally, the king had a message for the Riksdag politicians:
– What you decide in this chamber will affect the Swedish people for many years to come.
