The navy’s four new surface combat ships are to be named after Swedish port cities, while the new harbor tugs will be named after Greek mythology. This after the king’s approval.

Among the cities that are honored when the new surface combat ships are named are, among others, Luleå and Halmstad.

“The surface combat ships will be named after coastal cities that have or have had great importance for the navy. According to tradition, the harbor tugboats are named after Greek mythological names,” writes the head of the navy, Ewa Skoog Haslum, in a press release.

According to the Navy, the first completed ship also names the ship class itself. For the surface combat ships it will be HMS Luleå.

“The Luleå class will be larger than our existing Visby- and Gävle-class corvettes and be equipped to operate in all levels of conflict against targets on, above and below the surface. The ships will be important additions to an active defense and they will also be adapted to international contexts with our partner countries,” continues Skoog Haslum.

It is the head of the navy who chooses which names the navy’s ships will bear, but approval by the king is also required.

Exact details about the new surface combat ships are not yet known, but delivery is expected to take place around 2030, according to the Swedish Armed Forces.

The tugboats will be delivered in 2023 and 2024.
