In a new documentary, King Carl Gustav believes that the Riksdag decision to change the Swedish line of succession from Prince Carl Philip to Crown Princess Victoria was “unjust”.
The constitutional amendment that made Sweden receive full cognatic succession to the throne – that the eldest child inherits the throne regardless of gender – was initiated at the birth of Crown Princess Victoria but did not come into effect until a couple of years later.
Which in practice meant that the succession to the throne was moved from one sibling to another, after Prince Carl Philip was born into the role of crown prince.
Johan T Lindwall, editor-in-chief at Svensk damtidning comments on the statement:
– I thought the king had left this behind, I don’t think this is appropriate when the crown princess is doing a fantastic job.
