Italian journalist imprisoned in Iran three weeks ago Cecilia Sala has been released and returned safely to his homeland.

The plane carrying the secret landed at Rome’s Ciampino airport this afternoon, hours after the Italian prime minister by Giorgia Meloni the chancellery announced his release.

According to Melon, the journalist’s release was preceded by close communication through diplomatic channels and intelligence channels.

Sala had arrived in Iran on December 13 with a journalist’s visa issued by the authorities, but was arrested a few days later. According to Iran’s Ministry of Culture, Sala was accused of violating the country’s laws.
