Scrap incentive in automobiles is once again on the agenda. There are different thoughts and claims on this remarkable issue.

The news in Hürriyet about the current scrap incentive development is as follows: transferred: 2Law proposals were submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye to scrap vehicles that are over 5 years old and under 2000 models and to benefit from the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) discount. Since 2019, there has been no SCT discount for those with scrap vehicles. “With the new law proposal, those who recycle their vehicles that are 25 years old and older are requested to be exempt from Special Consumption Tax for a one-time only for the new vehicles they purchase, provided that they are produced in Turkey.” Automotive journalist Emre Özpeynirci, who made a statement on this subject, said the following: said: “There are many questions regarding the scrap incentive, let me answer again; It is expected that the SCT revenue to be collected from automotive in 2025 will reach 818.8 billion TL with an increase of 64.4%. Despite this surprising target of 819 billion TL, it is unrealistic to expect a SCT reduction or scrap incentive. Oh, there is an increase in Special Consumption Tax…”

Making an evaluation about the development, Aşin Automotive General Manager Okan Erdem said: “After 2000, scrap incentives and SCT reductions came up from time to time, some were implemented, some remained suspended. Under the current economic conditions, selling vehicles without SCT seems to be a difficult possibility. However, a local zero kilometer vehicle opportunity can be offered with a certain discount on Special Consumption Tax.” he said.

On the other hand, Erdem reminded of the abuses in scrap incentives in previous years: “Sector representatives and consumers will remember that with every scrap incentive, the prices of old cars increase exorbitantly, and those who want to benefit from opportunities such as SCT discounts buy these cars. A profit scheme emerges here. In case of a possible incentive, requiring a license such as 1 year, 2 years or 3 years from the date of registration for vehicle owners aged 25 and over will protect the rights of our citizens who really need it. “Again, a condition such as a 3-year or 5-year usage requirement should be stipulated for the sale of the SCT discounted vehicle to be purchased.”

Additionally, the following was reported: “Another issue included in the proposal was heavily damaged vehicles. While sector representatives are positive about the proposal to prevent vehicles that are heavily damaged and not repaired properly from being put on the roads, they state that a new independent control mechanism is needed regarding the salvage sale and repair processes of vehicles that are heavily damaged due to accidents or disasters.
