The lowest sleep duration in the ranking…
We all know the importance of a good night’s sleep to feel good in body and mind. The problem is that sleep habits vary between countries and you can see big differences even within Europe. This is what a survey carried out by blinds and curtains distributor 123Jaloezie shows.
After analyzing 19 European countries according to their sleep duration, their exposure to noise and light pollution, their level of anxiety and their possible problems sleeping, the brand reveals the best but also the worst countries in Europe where to spend good nights.
According to the results, Belgium sleeps the best in Europe. The country receives a score of 6.67/10. Next come Sweden (6.33/10), Finland (6/10) and the Netherlands (5.78/10). “Swedes are the least concerned about sleep, as evidenced by only 890 sleep-related Google searches per 100,000 inhabitants” underline the authors. In Finland, only 9% of the population is exposed to road noise and residents sleep more than seven and a half hours on average – excellent for their health. Even longer nights in the Netherlands since the Dutch have the highest average sleep duration in Europe, over seven and a half hours.
Unlike these countries, the worst performers in terms of sleep are not necessarily those we think. According to the 123Jaloezie survey, people sleep particularly poorly in Lithuania and Estonia (4.22/10). In this country, almost one in four inhabitants is exposed to road noise pollution. Worse still, in Ireland. “Ireland comes second on our list, with a score of 3.78/10. Across all factors considered, Ireland has almost 8,700 Google searches for sleep-related issues per 100,000 people , more than double the countries in our top three” comment the authors.
In last position in the ranking, a small country recognized in 2023 as “the richest in the world” by the IMF: Luxembourg. With a score of 3.67/10, it is the country where people sleep the worst in Europe. Surprising? Not really for the authors of the survey: “Residents have the lowest sleep duration in the ranking (7h23 compared to 7h29 in France (11th in the ranking out of 19 countries) and the worst light pollution score.”
