Kuopio’s Palloseura caused Vaasa’s Palloseura to lose for a long time in the men’s football league. The people of Vaasa, who played a whopping 22 consecutive matches without losses, succumbed to KuPS with goals 2–1.
VPS’s previous defeat in the Veikkausliiga was seen on June 27, 2023, when the team lost to Honga from Espoo 0–1 away.
Last season, VPS became a phenomenon when the team, which plowed badly in the early season, turned its course and sensationally rose to bronze.
This season has started in an equally amazing way, VPS leads the Veikkausliiga even after the KuPS loss.
The top-end battle played on Friday in freezing weather and strong wind did not offer big star moments in the opening half, but there were enough events in the second half to make up for it.
Right at the top of the second half Clinton Anthony shot at the end of a careless demolition attempt by the VPS defense to give KuPS a 1–0 lead. Axel Vidjeskog doubled the hosts’ lead in the 56th minute, but in the end KuPS had to make a fierce defensive fight for their victory.
First, VPS’s Danish striker Mads Borchers narrowed the game to 2–1 with his fourth hit of the season and just five minutes later the KuPS topper Ibrahim Cissé was driven out due to a second warning.
The last quarter was a fierce pressure from Vaasa, but KuPS fought for valuable home points, with which it rose to second place in the series, one point behind VPS.
