The killing of a trainee doctor who was sexually assaulted and killed while sleeping in a seminar room after a 36-hour shift at a public hospital in the Indian state of West Bengal is growing like an avalanche.
DOCTORS WILL GO ON JOBS
Anger over the country’s failure to deter a rising tide of violence against women by tough laws has fuelled protests by doctors and women’s groups.
Police said that more than 1,500 people were detained, while barricades set up by protesters disrupted public transportation in several parts of the state.
More than 1 million doctors will go on strike for a day tomorrow, as the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called on doctors across the country to shut down all services except emergency services for 24 hours from tomorrow morning.
Political parties, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), also held demonstrations in the state capital Kolkata, where the incident took place. Bollywood actors, artists and politicians called for stricter punishment for those who commit such crimes. (İHA)
