Armand Duplantis went out early in the Jerring prize.
It makes many people react strongly.
“Nothing but embarrassing,” writes hockey icon Jonas Bergqvist.
Armand Duplantis had an absolutely incomparable last year, where he once again cemented his place as the absolute hottest athlete in athletics. He won World Cup gold, broke a new world record in the same event, and in the world of athletics, Duplantis has topped every single list of who is the best male athlete, every category.
Disappeared early
Additionally, in many international polls, Duplantis has often been named second in all sports, behind only Lionel Messi. But when Sweden paid tribute to its heroes at the Sports Gala on Monday, Mondo went completely without awards, to the great surprise of many. Many had thought he would be awarded at least Male Athlete of the Year, but Nils van der Poel won there.
Nils van der Poel became all of Sweden’s great Olympic hero just over a year ago, when he won double gold and also broke a new world record. And for that, the now-retired skating star also won the Jerring Prize. Duplantis smoked in the penultimate round, and thus did not even make the top three in the vote, and afterwards many were disappointed with how the Swedish people had voted.

“Nothing but embarrassing”
One who reacted strongly was the hockey profile Jonas Bergqvist. Immediately after the announcement, he took to Twitter to plead his dissatisfaction with the Swedish people’s choice.
“Mondo not top three in the Jerring prize is nothing but embarrassing, I think,” he writes.
For Expressen, he develops:
– Bubka was my idol as a youngster and Mondo has crushed everything he has done. So that he was not among the three. I think it’s embarrassing, it’s boring.
– It is as it is with the voting. The emotional has taken over.
SVT’s reporter Johan Kücükaslan also reacted strongly.
“Armand Duplantis named second best male athlete in the world in 2022. Beaten by Lionel Messi alone. But not top 3 in the Jerring prize. Leave Sweden,” he writes.
The esteemed commentator and journalist Tommy Åström chose to publish, in short, the poll from AIPS (international sports journalism organization) where Duplantis came second, only behind Lionel Messi.
