There is no doubt that Magnus Wislander is one of Sweden’s best handball players of all time. The middle six have several WC and EC gold medals on their track record with Sweden and were an important piece in the successful “Bengan Boys” around the turn of the millennium.

Ready for a brand new assignment

“Slangen” was also named the best handball player in Sweden during the 20th century a huge testament to the greatness of the icon. The career ended after the 2005 season, but Wislander was responsible for a short foray into Redbergslid in 2011, and since then the Swede has devoted himself to other things.

Among other things, he has worked as an expert commentator for Sveriges Radio and as an assistant coach in Redbergslid IK. Now, however, the icon is ready for a new mission. He will be the new confederation captain for the Swedish national team in goalball.

It’s a new thing for me where I have a lot to learn. I see it as an exciting and interesting challenge, says Magnus Wislander to SVT.

“Can be really fun”

The icon’s contract extends to the Paralympics in Paris in 2024. He also admits that he has only practiced the sport once before in his life.

I tried to form an idea about the assignment and somehow the decision emerged and I understood that this could be really fun, says Magnus Wislander.

Ines Lopes, who is sports manager at the Swedish Parasport Federation, is pleased with the recruitment of Magnus Wislander. She thinks the icon is excellent for the mission.

There are actually certain similarities between handball and goalball that I think Magnus will benefit from, but above all it’s about developing and building a team that works together, she says.
